Cape Town, South Africa 2011

Boulders Beach

Penguins!! African penguins to be precise. Our first viewing of real live, wild penguins (although this bunch is pretty habituated to humans). This colony was nearly wiped out and through careful conservation and protection, they are now numbering near 3,000. Humans are not supposed to interact with the penguins, but the penguins do not know that and occasionally wander to the human side of the beach. Most congregate in the protected area where humans can view them from above ground walkways. The penguins are in the process of moulting, although you can still see some juveniles in the bunch that may still require their parents care. What a treat to see these silly birds.
