Cape Town, South Africa 2011

St. James Beach

Even though it was getting late, we just had to go to the beach. Our hosts at the Colona Castle recommended a little seaside town about 5 minutes away, so off we went.

St. James Beach is a small tidal pool, by which the South African mean a man made pool that is refreshed with the tides. As you can see from the pictures, the pool has concrete sides that the surf washes over and replenishes the water leftover from the low tide. In my neck of the woods (California) a tidal pool is a natural pool left when the tide goes out and is usually a place were you can find all sorts of sea life waiting for the tide to return. Anyway... as the tide was coming in and the water was quite cold, we mostly stuck to the concrete walls of the "tidal" pool and the rocks and sand. Lucas and Ed got drenched by the waves, the girls were somehow better able to predict when the waves would crash and thus avoiding the same sort of drenching.

Sandy and spent we returned to the hotel for a quick shower followed by a lovely seafood dinner and an early bedtime.

Colorful public changing huts at St. James Beach.

The Metro Train that runs along the False Bay coastline.

See the concrete walls of the "tidal" pool. I imagine this is also a precaution against sharks as well as a relatively safe and calm place to swim.

Loving the beach!
